Dinner at the Hanes’ residence was going well, so far. We’d been there for about an hour, and Zara had been doing most of the talking. Rashaad was right about her not being able to hold water. She told her grandparents all about the night I had dinner at their house, from what they cooked for me, to everything we talked about, to her falling asleep before she could read us a story. Eventually, Rashaad took her outside to play, leaving me alone with his parents.

Mrs. Hanes seemed to be warming up to me. Although I hadn’t said much, the vibe between us was a lot more relaxed than our first meeting. I noticed that she watched my interactions with Zara very closely. I couldn’t even be mad about that because I understood. Zara had been through enough already, and Mrs. Hanes wanted to protect her. Mr. Hanes was as cool as the other side of the pillow.

“How did your parents feel about their only child moving away?” Mrs. Hanes asked.

“Surprisingly, they were okay with it. My father thought it was past time for me to spread my wings a little since I didn’t go away for college.”

“What made you choose D.C.?” she asked.

“My cousin, Keyla, went to Howard and never moved back home. I’ve visited her often over the years, and I found something new to love about it every time.”

“There’s so much to love here. I don’t blame you. Atlanta has a lot to offer as well,” Mr. Hanes added.

“It does. I love my city. When I was deciding what college I wanted to attend, it didn’t even cross my mind to look outside of Atlanta. Emory University had everything I wanted in a college. It being in my hometown was a bonus.”

“How often do you get back to Atlanta?” he asked.

“Every few months. I’m actually due for a visit in a couple of weeks. My parents are throwing a big party for their thirty-fifth wedding anniversary.”

“Oh, wow! We just celebrated our thirty-sixth a few months ago. Congratulations to them. Staying married this long in this day and age is no easy feat,” said Mrs. Hanes.

“Especially when your wife is as crazy as mine,” Mr. Hanes added.

We all laughed at his joke and continued to converse a bit longer. Once Mrs. Hanes announced that dinner was ready, Zara and Rashaad came in, smelling like outside. Once they washed up, we met in the dining room and enjoyed a salad, fried catfish, spaghetti, homemade hush puppies, and corn on the cob. For dessert, she made a caramel cake. It wasn’t extravagant, but damn, it was good. I’d be spending some extra time in the studio to work off this meal.

Because Rashaad had to go back to RBL, Zara was staying overnight at his parents’ house. He went through her nightly routine with her while I helped Mrs. Hanes clean the kitchen. As we were finishing up, Zara came to get me to read Rashaad and me a story. After
